Optimizing a Personalized Multigram Cellphone Keypad
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current layouts for alphabetic input on mobile phone keypads are very inefficient. We propose a genetic algorithm (GA) to find a suitable keypad layout for each user, based on their personal text history. It incorporates codes for frequent multigrams, which may be directly input. This greatly reduces the average number of strokes required for typing. We optimize for two-handed use, the left thumb covering the leftmost rows and vice versa. The GA minimizes the number of strokes, consecutive use of the same key, and consecutive use of the same hand. Using these criteria, the algorithm re-arranges the 26 alphabetic characters, plus 14 additional multigrams, on the 10-key pad. We demonstrate that this arrangement can generate a more effective layout, especially for SMS-style messages. Substantial savings are verified by both computational analysis and human evaluation.

متن کاملTesting Predictive Text Entry Methods with Constrained Keypad Designs
The problem of optimizing keypad designs for predictive text entry methods for handheld devices has received significant interest in recent years. The necessity of such optimization lies in the ever-increasing difficulty of inputting text into mobile devices, particularly those of extremely small size. Predictive keypad text entry methods, such as Tegic’s T9, only require one key press for each...

STEGANOPIN: A PIN ENTRY METHOD with SHOULDER SURFING RESISTANCE
Automated Teller Machine (ATM) frauds are escalating gradually. The principal cause for this is the repetition of same personalized identification numbers (PINs) for multiple systems or accounts. Indirect PIN entry methods though available are not yet deployed everywhere and are not user friendly. To increase security and applicability we have implemented a new PIN entry method called SteganoPI...
متن کاملMaximizing interaction with mobile devices: quarts into pint pots
If a device is to be portable it must be small. However, the smaller a device is, the less physical room there is on it. This in turn limits the amount of space available for input and output mechanisms In this paper we present the results of a number of small studies which have investigated making the most of the input/output facilities of miniature devices. These cover: • data to guide the de...
